The Bertha V.B. Lederer Gallery is pleased to present Michael Teres: 50 Years of Photography. Teres, a retired professor of art, began his photographic journey as a youngster in Brooklyn New York. His interest and fascination with light and its affect on forms and objects continues.

Michael Teres is not unlike other artists who consider themselves a “visual storyteller and composer.” And it is with the camera, and then with Photoshop he manipulates and reconstructs his images creating a record of his artistic adventures, ‘Photoshop helps him describe to others what it is like to walk through his mind’s eye.’

After forty years of teaching photography he remains impressed by the ephemeral quality of light, incorporating the image, and light, and his deep knowledge of the immateriality of light and its effect on the image, which hovers between the physical and imaginary world.

The works included here are from his long-term series of Self Portraits, and a series in which Teres has made extensive photographic studies of his own eyes. Other works include images of food, social groups, nature, and human made materials. I urge visitors not miss his photographs from the late 1960s and early 1970s that began his remarkable career in digitizing and reconstructing photographs that possess a surreal quality, and have evolved over the years to form a new and innovative understanding of what a photograph might be.
