Opening Exhibition – Hand-Picked: Art Expressions of Farmworkers Who Feed Us @ Lockhart Gallery in SUNY Geneseo McClellan House
Oct 23 @ 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm

From June – October 2018, a series of three art workshops, funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, was conducted for migrant farmworkers in eight counties of Western New York. These workshops culminated in an exhibit entitled, “Hand Picked: Art Expression of Farmworkers Who Feed Us.”

So often farmworkers are an invisible population in this country, yet they are invaluable to our communities and our economy, These workshops produced a gestalt of various aspects of the individual artists themselves, to pull away the veil, so that they can truly be seen as deeply feeling human beings who are gifted and talented, and dedicated to their families, communities, and their work. This vision for a traveling exhibit was designed to raise the awareness of all viewers toward a clear understanding of the inner and outer lives of migrant farmworkers in eight counties of Western New York. This exhibit also features six poems by Mexican and Puerto Rican participants in our literature program that was funded by the New York State Council on the Arts.

This exhibition is funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York State Council on the Arts.

All exhibits are free and open to the public. We look forward to your visit to the gallery. For more information contact Lori Houtz at 585-245-5841 or Cynthia Hawkins at 585-245-5813.

Artist Panel Discussion at 5:30 PM

The SUNY Geneseo Bertha V.B. Lederer Gallery is pleased to present this photographic group exhibition about the landscape. It includes both the physical and spiritual interpretations of and in the American landscape. The exhibiting artists are: Denis Defibaugh, Robert Doyle, Carl Hazelwood, Joanna Jennings, John Reuter , Kristine Tenalio, Andy Smith, Dick Thomas, and Edward (Ken) White.

At this exhibit the visitor will experience a range of photographic experiences, from the panoramic views of Robert Doyle’s views of New York to Denis Defibaugh’s Norwegian village Uummanq in Greenland. From Joanna Jennings’ psychological spiritual renderings of historical memory to John Reuter’s sometimes surreal polaroid photographs to Carl Hazelwood’s ubiquitous travel photos from studio windows. What the audience witnesses here is the continuing extension of photography in the hands of and through the eye of mature artist photographers.
