SUNY Geneseo Wind Quintet @ Doty Recital Hall
Feb 9 @ 3:00 pm

Join the Geneseo Wind Quintet on Sunday, February 9th at 3:00 pm in Doty Recital Hall for our spring concert featuring an airy and animated keyboard music program! Colorful transcriptions for the core woodwind quintet members of keyboard works by Bach and Beethoven will precede Poulenc’s tour de force, Sextour, featuring SUNY Geneseo Instrumental Collaborative Pianist, Kurt Galvan.

Enamored with the remarkable instrumental concertos of Antonio Vivaldi, J.S. Bach absorbed the essence of Vivaldi’s clever melodic shaping and confident contrasts between tutti and solo sections as he delved into his own adaptations of the very same music he revered. Bach’s Concerto for Organ No. 2 in A minor, BWV 394, is an adaptation of Vivaldi’s famous Concerto for Two Violins in A minor, RV 522, No. 8, and the Geneseo Wind Quintet lends its colorful timbres to one more degree of transformation, in Mordechai Rechtman’s arrangement of Bach’s work. Felix Skowronek’s transcription of L. van Beethoven’s cheery Pieces for Mechanical Organ for wind quintet, creatively displays the clock-like time and colors of characteristic wooden and metal pipes associated with the 18th century mechanical instrument. To close the program, pianist Kurt Galvan will join the quintet members for a rousing performance of a piece composed in 1931 and continually revised for a decade during a period of wartime anguish, Poulenc’s Sextour.

The Wind Quintet members: Andrew Brown, clarinet; Megan Kyle, oboe; Maura McCune Corvington, horn; Martha Sholl, bassoon; Kathryn Scarbrough flute

Admission is free / all are welcome.

Geneseo Symphony Orchestra @ Asbury First United Methodist Church
Feb 15 @ 6:00 pm

Please join the Geneseo Symphony Orchestra and conductor Dr. Leah McGray in their celebration of American composers in two concerts this February! Guest artist Dr. Artina McCain, a Gateways Music Festival musician, and professor at the University of Memphis, joins us for performances of the recently discovered Florence Price “Concerto in D Minor” for Piano and Orchestra, written in 1934. Price’s music is currently experiencing a revival, as many of her works were premiered, and then stored in a family member’s basement without being published until a fire revealed the wealth of works, which are finally enjoying new life.

• The first concert (February 15 at 6 PM) will be held at Asbury First United Methodist Church, 1050 East Ave., Rochester, and also feature the ROCmusic Collaborative String Orchestra, a free orchestral training program for elementary and secondary students in Rochester. A free will donation accepted at the door will be collected for ROCmusic and Ashbury First Methodist Church.

• The second concert (February 16 at 3 PM) will be held in Wadsworth Auditorium on the SUNY Geneseo campus, and also feature performances from winners from the 2019 Geneseo Concerto Competition, Regina Dziergas, flute, and Kayla McGallian, soprano. This concert is free and all are welcome!

Gamelan Lila Muni – Music from Bali, Indonesia @ Doty Recital Hall at SUNY Geneseo
Feb 23 @ 3:00 pm

Please join the SUNY Geneseo Department of Music as it hosts Gamelan Lila Muni.
• Sunday, February 23, at 3:00 PM in the Doty Recital Hall

Gamelan at Eastman, as in Bali, is a communal effort. The music is learned through the oral/aural tradition without the use of notation, and therefore requires the players to work together closely for long periods of time. The result is a sense of group unity and pride as the audience hears the music and witnesses the collective efforts of the ensemble. The ensemble at the Eastman Community Music School, Gamelan Lila Muni (Heavenly Sound), is an ancient four-tone gamelan angklung which traditionally performs music for rituals and ceremonies.

Free and all are welcome.
