Exhibit: Book of Hours/Ours and Selections from Permanent Collection

The Bertha V.B. Lederer Gallery is pleased to present a new series of works by two artists that have exhibited with the gallery in the past, Cicely Cottingham and Victor Davson. The title of the exhibit is based on the Christian devotional prayer book created during the Middle Ages, The Book of Hours. What is remarkable about these two individuals is that though artists of very different temperaments and methodologies, they came together to produce a landscape exhibit that one calls his practice during isolation. The other, Cottingham’s realization and acceptance of the fact that she is indeed a landscape painter.
During their interview, available on the galleries website, they discuss their responses to the lushness of ”Cicely’s garden,” and for Davson, the hidden history of Lenape land on which they and other Northern New Jersey residents live. That deer still traverse the property following an intuitive and centuries old path, going north in the spring and going south in the late fall, is testament to many lives and cultures that maintained themselves on that site. The landscape paintings are clearly that, however they are so much more, they are heart-felt abstractions that touch the sublime that is nature herself.
