Featured on the program will be a variety of compositions that represent different historical periods and that explore multiple approaches to the sonorities of the piano. Included are works by J.S. Bach, Brahms, Debussy, and Rachmaninoff, as well as the world premiere of two commissioned works by James Walker. Admission is free.
The concert represents the culmination of an ambitious sabbatical project, which involved learning not only the works on this program but also the entire sets of preludes by Debussy and by Rachmaninoff. “I have been wanting for many years to learn those particular works for performance in concert and for recording,” said Dr. Gonder. “I am grateful for the opportunity provided by SUNY that enabled me to do so.”
“The program includes Baroque and Romantic works, along with three very different approaches to writing for the piano from twentieth- and twenty-first-century composers. One of the great versatilities of the piano is that it sounds like a different instrument in the works of composers from different musical eras.”
