Roberta Rainey, a Rochester area artist, is self-taught and continues to perfect her chosen craft. Rainey is committed to portrait painting, and her focus is African American women and girls. Capturing her sitter’s emotions whether cool and serious, the sitter’s laughter or capturing the individual in conversation. Rainey relishes the challenge of catching the swift changes in expression and the qualities that can tell the viewer so much about the person. She prefers painting in neutral tones of gray, black and white, and occasionally add color for contrast. Rainey has exhibited around Rochester and has received many commissions; she also teaches elementary school.
The gallery is pleased to present this Rochester, New York artist as part of our new initiative to exhibit the work of artists from Western New York.
