Join the Geneseo Wind Quintet for our winter concert featuring “mid-century modern” repertoire! The program includes two favorites from the wind quintet canon, as well as a feature for our new members: Kathryn Scarbrough, flute, and Andrew Brown, clarinet.
All of the pieces on the program were composed between the 1920s and the 1950s, but each demonstrates a different relationship with the themes and concerns of Modernism. We’ll explore the “new objectivity” of Paul Hindemith’s *Kleine Kammermusik*, composed in post-World War I Germany, as well as the burgeoning experimentalism of the early *Six Bagatelles* by György Ligeti and the unique blend of folk music and Modernist art music aesthetics of Heitor Villa-Lobos’s *Chôros No. 2*. And we’ll hear how the *Pastorale* by Amy Beach, written two years before her death, encapsulates her lush late-Romantic-era sensibility in conversation with 20th-century tonal developments.
The Wind Quintet members: Andrew Brown, clarinet; Megan Kyle, oboe; Maura McCune Corvington, horn; Martha Sholl, bassoon; Kathryn Scarbrough flute
Admission is free / all are welcome.
