Join the Geneseo Wind Quintet for our spring concert featuring a colorful program of dance! Tuneful highlights from the wind quintet canon range from Arnold’s setting of authentic sea shanties to the jazz and Latin rhythms of D’Rivera and a feature for our reed members: Megan Kyle, oboe, Andrew Brown, clarinet, and Martha Sholl, bassoon.
Memorably premiered in an airport hanger in the Southwest of England in 1943, Three Shanties for Wind Quintet by composer Malcolm Arnold opens with the boisterous “What Shall We Do With a Drunken Sailor?” and a hint of tango, and dramatically shifts to the respectively sweet and rhythmically lively, “Boney Was a Warrior,” and “Johnny Come Down to Hilo.” Renowned bassoonist K. David Van Hoesen’s elegant arrangements of Debussy’s famous impressionistic piano pieces, Deux Arabesques, will be followed by Henri Tomasi’s 1938 reed trio. Tomasi’s brilliant orchestration highlights distinctive rhythms and gestures of the early Renaissance in Concert Champêtre. To close the program, Cuban-born classical prodigy and clarinetist, Paquito D’Rivera showcases his multinational style in selections featuring Latin bass lines, a classic Habanera in the style of Ravel, and a Venezuelan waltz in his exhilarating and toe-tapping quintet, Aires Tropicales.
Admission is free.
